Surfers ear (exostosis) isn't pleasant at all, it takes years for the ear canals to close up due to the effects of cold water, but, why risk it? If you are in the water all the time then some sort of ear plugs is highly recommended.
Silicon ear putty is a very cost effective way to protect your ears. Simply roll one ball of putty per ear then mould into the ear. These are reusable and once too dirty, just use another bit, 6 balls of putty per pack.
Ideal for surfing, kitesurfing, swimming and all other surface watersports.
